Discover the magic!
MAGIC MOTIVES
A Method for
Developing Jazz Vocabulary
Dan Haerle. Motives, also referred
to as motifs, licks, or clichés, are
the building blocks of a good jazz
vocabulary. This book shows how
motives may be developed using
simple five-note major, minor,
and diminished scales and how
to apply chromatic embellishment
to those scales. The "magic"
appears when you discover that
any motives created from these
scales may be superimposed over a
variety of chords with equally good
results. Also included are detailed
explanations and pages of motives
in a variety of harmonic situations,
including standard chord changes.
The accompanying CD includes
practice tracks with play-along
parts in the book transposed for all
instruments. Expand your creative
universe with Magic Motives!

l Heavy Legs—Duke Pearson. Duke Pearson's Heavy Legs is a surprisingly
high-energy entry into his catalog as a composer. The opening ensemble riff is a
fairly simple dialogue between the horns and piano and rips right along at about
220 bpm. The introductory material pops up one last time before the melody is
over to serve as a send off into the first solo. The melody is restated once the
solos are over, followed by a vamp and fade over the theme with the piano filling
in the gaps. This is pure fun for a small band! Instrumentation: flute, ATB saxes,
trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums and optional guitar.

Honeybuns—Duke Pearson. One of the best examples of early jazz/rock is
the title track from Duke Pearson's 1965 album Honeybuns. The chart begins
with an irresistible gospel/rock/swing riff in the horns and piano and is followed
by an equally catchy melody played by trumpet, tenor saxophone and flute.
Harmonically, the melody is based on an extended G blues, with the form lasting
for 24 measures as opposed to the traditional 12. On the original recording the
only solos are for trumpet and piano, with the saxophones playing the same
introductory figure as a background. In this version solo changes are included
in each part allowing solos to be added or opened up. This one is very soulful,
cute and fun! Instrumentation: flute, ATB saxes, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass,
drums and optional guitar.

Is That So?—Duke Pearson. Is That So? is a small band chart from Duke
Pearson's 1965 album Sweet Honey Bee. It swings at around 160 bpm with
a light, airy melody while the trumpet plays lead. Additional features include
alternating 3/4 and 4/4 meters, and open solos for anyone. This is great fun for
smaller bands! Instrumentation: Flute, Alto Sax/Flute, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax,
Trumpet, Trombone, Optional Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drums.

New Girl—Duke Pearson. This smaller instrumentation does nothing to limit
the brilliant intricacy of Duke Pearson's New Girl. The lilting melody enters and
is initially stated in unison by trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax and flute. The melody
is never directly re-stated, as Pearson opts for a roaring, brilliantly orchestrated
shout section to follow up the solo section. Instrumentation: flute, alto sax/flute,
tenor sax, baritone sax/clarinet, trombone, piano, bass, drums and optional guitar.
